Hadhrat Sheikh Maulana Abdul Haq Azami Passes Away

Renowned Islamic scholar and an accomplished Hadith Professor of Darul Uloom Deoband, Sheikh Maulana Abdul Haq Azami, passed away in Deoband after a short illness on the eve of  December 30 at the age of 88. On his death a wave of grief and sorrow permeated the circles of Ulama, students and the common Muslims.

The Vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband, Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, while expressing his deepest sorrows on the demise of the Sheikh, stated that it is an incredible loss to Darul Uloom Deoband and to the whole Muslim Nation. He declared that with the Sheikh's death a chapter of teaching Hadith in India has been closed, and the Muslim World has indeed lost a great Hadith Scholar.

The funeral prayer of Maulana Azami was led by the President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, and was performed in the Daar-e-Jadeed campus at 3:30 pm. The deceased was laid to rest in Qasmi graveyard in the presence of thousands of scholars and students.

Sheikh Abdul Haq Azami was engaged in imparting knowledge in Darul Uloom Deoband since 1982. He used to teach Sahih Bukhari and Mishkat al-Masabih, etc to the students of higher classes. Being from amongst the top scholars of Darul Uloom Deoband, he was frequently invited both locally and abroad to give lectures on Sahih Bukhari. He spent sixty years of his life in spreading Islamic knowledge, especially teaching Sahih Bukhari.

More than forty thousand students have benefited immensely from him and completed the Aalim and Fazil course. With his demise an era of Hadith teaching came to an end. He was an embodiment of piety, knowledge, simplicity and humility. Due to his humbleness and modesty, he was popular amongst Ulama and the public.

Sheikh was born in Jagdishpur, Dist Azamgarh (UP) in 1928. He acquired his primary education at Madrasah Baitul Uloom Sarai Mir, after which he was enrolled in Darul Uloom Mau and studied till the Arabic Year 7 (Haftum). He was a stepson of the famous scholar Maulana Muhamamd Muslim Jaunpuri and was nurtured by him. He completed his graduation in Hadith and Islamic sciences in 1955 at the hands of various scholars of his time, specially Sheikhul Islam Hadhrat Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani. After the completion of his studies, he served as lecturer at different Madaris and held the posts of Sheikh al-Hadith and Sadrul Mudarriseen, particularly in Madrasah Matla'ul Uloom, Banaras, Jami'ah Husainiyyah Giridih, Jharkhand, and at Darul Uloom Mau.
